AXOR - MY EDITION COMPETITION

The AXOR 'My Edition'' is a collection of luxury mixers for the age of personalisation. Flat, modern and supremely minimal, the mixer is topped by an elegant cover plate in the material of one's choice.

You are required to design a cover plate for the AXOR 'My Edition' mixer, inspired by South Africa, or Africa and your own personal culture. Your plate must be designed for any suitable CAST material incorporating a unique relief pattern. The AXOR logo must appear on the cover plate.

During this project you will each prototype your cover plates through a series of steps including vector creation, CAD modelling, master pattern making, mould making, casting and finishing.
My inspiration shown in the mood board above includes the South African sunsets, that fill the sky with the most colourful arrays of light. As a lover of nature, and having gone on many trips out of the bustling city and to the bush in my childhood, the South African landscape has always fascinated me. From the velt, to the mountains, trees and reservoirs I think these organic motifs could easily inform my design. City life however has also been an inspiration, as the Sunday flee market I would attend showcased art and design creations by local artisans. Their creativity and artistic sensibilities are uniquely South African and definitely inform my perspective on this project.

My own ethnicity is of an Indian and Malay background. From which I have been inspired by the various textiles, patterns and fabric designs. Additionally, my Islamic faith also plays into my culture. I have always found the elements of Islamic design to be beautiful. The use of ogee arches and detailed ornamentation - which is distinctly Arabian and even South Asian in aesthetic - is very captivating in its ornateness.

My Axor "My Edition" mounting plate design was my take on the embodiment of South Africa and even Africa as a whole, which is that of unity. As a country and continent, African people have faced much strife, abuse, exploitation and grief, however we always find a way to unite, support and stand in solidarity with one another. South Africans have the incredible ability create beauty in times of difficulty. Be it through song, performance or art we somehow manage to find the light in the darkness, to heal and to nurture growth towards a brighter future. I believe that the beautiful African sun will continue to rise creating a new brighter dawn tomorrow.
